Removing CV Joints Sunday, September 6, 2009

So last night we removed the CV joints. Before we did that we bled the brakes because there was a little air in the brake line. It was a long night with alot of awkward spots and little room to move but we finally got them out! The steps that we had to do were:

Remove wheel
Bleed Brakes
Remove Calipers (If you do this make sure you don't put the brake on while the calipers are off or the piston will push in and you'll have to get new calipers)
Remove Brake Rotors
Take off Brake Line Pin
Remove Steering Toe Ball Arm
Remove Suspension
Remove CV from Hub
Unbolt Mid Bearing from Chassis (Workshop Manual sais there is 2 bolts, People on the forum said there was 3 bolts, Thre is definately 3 bolts and all in awkward positions. Make sure you get all 3 or the CV won't come out)
Pull like hell and CV comes out

Also while that far back under the car we found how screwed the gearbox really was. Thanks a heap to Simo for supplying us with a new gearbox. The gearbox has a few big cracks in it as well as a big chunk missing from the back of it where you can see inside the gearbox and see the gears! We originally were just going to fix the gearbox but now we realise that we were lucky we decided to buy a new one!

Getting the steering ball toe out was complicated but we found a way in the end. In the end we unbolted the nut off the bottom of the screw, put a little jack up so it was touching the screw and would not let it push down and then hit the bracket beside it to get it out of the connection.

So now the car rolls freely without the clicks and crunches from the gearbox and we will be able to push it backwards! We will get it up on the ramps thisafternoon and then plan the gearbox change.

So heres some photos of us taking the CV's out. Theres also a few of the broken gearbox.
